About Hormone Optimization
Have you noticed a change in your energy levels, metabolism, or sex drive as you age? Your hormones play an important role in regulating your body so when you have an imbalance, all of these aspects can be affected. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is an effective treatment that can regulate your symptoms. Board-certified physician Dr. Tricia Shimer has partnered with Hormone Therapy Centers of America to provide BHRT with pellets to her patients. Unlike alternative synthetic treatments, BHRT uses hormones identical to those naturally secreted by your body. If you are over age 40 and have not undergone blood work to test for hormone level imbalances, we encourage you to do so. Let us help get you back on track to becoming your best self. Who Can BENEFIT FROM Hormone Optimization?
If we determine you are a good candidate for BHRT pellet therapy, our medical team will perform a thorough evaluation of your health prior to your treatment. This will likely include a physical examination and a blood test. We will also perform a urinalysis to rule out other conditions as a precaution.
If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, you may have a hormone imbalance:
- Low energy levels
- Hair loss
- Vaginal dryness or atrophy
- Irregular or heavy periods
- Depression, anxiety, or irritability
- Changes in weight
- Appetite changes
Your Hormone OPTImizATION Treatment
When you come in for your procedure at our Dallas, TX office, our medical staff will make sure you are comfortable in one of our private patient rooms. First, we will apply a local anesthetic to the incision area. Then, the BHRT pellets will be inserted into the skin in your upper buttocks where they will deliver a steady stream of hormones over time. This helps prevent any "rollercoaster-like" effects. The small, round pellets are made by compounding pharmacists in customized amounts based on your specific needs. Dr. Shimer will determine your dosage from the results of your blood test.
What to Expect after BHRT
Your body should take about a week to adjust to the new hormones after your BHRT pellet treatment. If not, let us know so we can alter your dose. You should start experiencing results within the first 2 – 3 weeks after therapy and will continue to see improvements for about eight weeks. Dr. Shimer advises her patients to replace their BHRT pellets 3 – 4 times per year, or sooner if necessary. You will need to attend routine appointments over the next several months at Evolve Med Spa to be sure you are maintaining the appropriate pellet dosage.
Hormone Optimization FAQ
What is hormone optimization?
Hormone optimization is ensuring your hormone levels are where they need to be for optimal health. This can mean supplementation with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Often as we age, the levels of hormones in our bodies drop. For men, this can mean lower testosterone caused by andropause. For women, the optimal hormone levels are a bit more complex involving estrogen and others, which are often imbalanced during menopause. If your hormone levels aren’t balanced it can affect every system in your body and impact your quality of life.
How can I optimize my hormonal health?
Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and nutritional supplements are good ways to improve your hormonal levels. However, if your hormonal imbalances are caused by aging, usually beginning after 40 (menopause or andropause), Dr. Shimer may recommend bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) to get your hormonal levels back into a healthy balance.
What are the signs of a hormonal imbalance?
Signs of hormonal imbalances are different for men and women, but in general, if your hormone levels aren’t at the optimal level, it can have a host of health effects, including:
- Low energy
- Lowered sex drive
- Mood swings, depression, or anxiety
- Weight gain
- Loss of muscle mass
- Irregular periods
- Hair loss
