What Is A Chemical Peel?

If you're looking to enhance the look of your skin without needles or surgery, consider a chemical peel at Evolve Med Spa. This popular procedure stimulates cellular turnover to a smoother, healthier look on the face, neck, and decolletage. An exfoliating solution is applied to the skin's outer layer, causing the dead skin to eventually peel off. Dr. Tricia Shimer's team will create a personalized treatment plan to achieve your best results. This will involve selecting from light, medium, or deep peels using products by ZO® Skin Health. Each treatment is ideal for addressing wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, discoloration, acne, mild scars, and more. As the repairing process begins, you should notice brighter, younger-looking skin. All chemical peels are performed in our Dallas, TX office by our licensed aestheticians who are well-versed in ZO Skin Health products. Call our office today to schedule a consultation.

What Are the Different Types of Chemical Peels Available?

Evolve Med Spa offers a variety of treatment options for your chemical peel that our team can personalize based on your skin type.

ZO 3-Step Peel™: This procedure is ideal for all skin types and utilizes a blend of exfoliants, retinol, and multi-action agents to treat signs of aging and boost your skin's overall health. It exfoliates the top layer of skin while also going to work within your skin's deeper layers. This procedure is followed by an at-home treatment.

Stimulator Peel: Also known as the "Glow Treatment," this procedure utilizes lactic acid to brighten the skin, as well as glycolic acid to enhance exfoliation. This peel is mild enough to use every week with little to no downtime, and most patients experience no peeling. It is ideal for special occasions and can offer even more enhanced results when paired with a dermaplaning procedure at Evolve Med Spa.

Am I A Candidate for A Chemical Peel?

First, we'll perform a skin examination to determine if you are a candidate for a chemical peel, and if so, what kind of peel is right for you. The following issues are good indicators that you may in fact be a candidate:

  • Skin discoloration
  • Sun damage
  • Skin is prone to breakouts
  • Age spots
  • Rough or scaly patches
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Scarring

Schedule a consultation with us if you have any of the above issues. If you are a good candidate for a chemical peel, Dr. Shimer's team can provide a treatment that is personalized to you to deliver your best results.

How Is A Chemical Peel Performed?

When you arrive for your procedure at Evolve Med Spa, you can lie back and relax in one of our comfortable patient treatment rooms. First, we will cleanse your skin in preparation for your chemical peel. We may also apply a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable, depending on the type of peel selected. Next, we apply a chemical solution to your skin, which will penetrate for a specified length of time, depending on the peel. Then, we gently remove the peel from your face, thoroughly cleaning off the chemicals. This is followed by an application of a neutralizing agent. We recommend protecting your skin from sun exposure with a hat and sunscreen after the treatment.

What Should I Expect after My Peel?

You may experience peeling and itching for several days or weeks after your procedure, depending on the type of peel. Your skin may be sensitive after your chemical peel so it's important to protect yourself from UV rays. Dr. Shimer recommends staying out of the sun in the weeks following your procedure. Additionally, resist picking or scratching at your skin after your treatment, no matter how much it itches. This will help it heal and prevent scarring. Our aestheticians can guide you on which skin care products and methods to use during your recovery at home, as well as answer any additional questions you may have.

Chemical Peel FAQ

What level should I choose for my chemical peel?
The best chemical peel for you will depend on your specific skin issues and cosmetic goals. During your consultation with Dr. Shimer or a member of the Evolve Med Spa team, they can help you choose which chemical peel from ZO Skin Health is right for your skin. A few factors you may want to consider are your general health, the type of skin you have, how deep you want the peel to work, how long you can spend in recovery, and what you want the peel to accomplish. Initially, it may be better to start with a light peel and decide what you think of the results. From there, you and the team at our Dallas, TX office might alter your treatment plan to decide on the best type of peel for your skin.

Will my face hurt after a chemical peel?
Based on the peel selected, you may feel some discomfort during the application process. If you choose a Stimulator Peel, you will feel minimal or no discomfort. Deep or medium peels are good for deeper skin problems and give you longer-lasting results; however, they are usually more uncomfortable. Numbing cream, medications, and ointments may be used to help you feel more comfortable during the chemical peel. Dr. Shimer or a member of her team will go over how to care for your skin after a peel with at-home care to extend your results.

Can I combine a chemical peel with other treatments?
You might consider combining a chemical peel with another skin treatment at Evolve Med Spa. During your consultation, be forthright with Dr. Shimer and the team when describing your skin and cosmetic issues and goals so they can create a comprehensive treatment plan that delivers you the best results possible. Your plan may include adding injectable wrinkle treatments (like JUVÉDERM® or BOTOX®) along with your chemical peel to rejuvenate your look.

Should I get a chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment?
Both dermabrasion and chemical peels are facial treatments that address surface blemishes to give your skin a rejuvenated appearance. The main difference is that dermabrasion requires special tools (a shaving instrument or rotating brush ) to remove the surface skin layer through a careful exfoliating process. A chemical peel applies a caustic solution to your skin to dissolve damaged skin cells. During your initial consultation, our team will go over the pros and cons of each treatment and help you choose if a chemical peel or dermabrasion best fits your skin goals.

How much does a chemical peel cost?
A member of our team can go over your costs in your consultation as soon as we have developed your personalized treatment plan. Costs for a chemical peel can vary depending on the level you select.

How often can I get a chemical peel?
The frequency of chemical peels depends on several factors, including the type of peel you're getting, your skin's sensitivity, and your overall skincare goals. Lighter peels can often be performed more frequently, sometimes as often as every 4-6 weeks, while medium to deep peels may require several months between sessions for optimal healing and results. During your consultation, the team at Evolve Med Spa will work with you to develop a tailored treatment plan that aligns with your skin needs and lifestyle. This will help determine how often you should schedule your chemical peels to achieve and maintain your desired outcomes.
